What Does a Water Pump Do in a Car?

A water pump is crucial for regulating engine temperature by circulating coolant between the engine and the radiator. It absorbs heat from the engine and transfers it to the radiator to prevent overheating. Without it, the engine can suffer severe damage. Here are some ways a water pump works:

Circulating Coolant

The engine’s crankshaft drives a belt that typically powers the water pump. As soon as the engine starts, the pump’s rotating impeller begins to turn. This rotational motion circulates coolant through the engine’s cooling channels into the radiator.
Cooling the Engine

The coolant absorbs engine heat during the combustion process and then flows into the radiator. It passes through a series of thin tubes and fins, and the heat gets dissipated into the surrounding air with the help of airflow generated by the vehicle’s radiator or by driving at speed.
Maintaining Constant Temperature

The thermostat, radiator, and water pump all work together to keep the engine operating temperature constant, which is necessary for effective combustion, minimal emissions, and maximum fuel efficiency.
