What is the Cylinder Head in a Car?

The cylinder head is crucial to a car's internal combustion engine. It is located at the top of the engine block and seals the combustion chambers to prevent the escape of gases and maintain compression within the cylinders. Additionally, the cylinder head routes coolant and oil, houses the intake and exhaust valves and camshafts, installs the spark plugs, and is bolted to the engine block for a sealed connection.

1. Camshafts

   The camshaft is a rotating shaft with eccentric lobes that control the opening and closing of the valves. It is driven by the crankshaft and synchronized with the engine's rotation.

2. Spark Plugs

   In gasoline engines, spark plugs are installed in the cylinder head. They provide the spark needed to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.

3. Valves

   Intake valves open to allow the air-fuel mixture to enter the combustion chamber during the intake stroke. Exhaust valves open to allow the burned gases to exit the combustion chamber during the exhaust stroke.
